Intracept Procedure

Intracept is a minimally invasive procedure to treat chronic low back pain caused by degenerative disc disease. During the procedure, a special probe is inserted into the vertebral body of the affected disc and delivers radiofrequency energy to the nerves that transmit pain signals from the disc.

A small probe is inserted into the vertebral body of the affected disc through a small incision in the skin, and a small heating element at the end of the probe is activated. The heating element delivers radiofrequency energy to the nerves that transmit pain signals from the disc. The energy heats up and damages the nerves, which can reduce or eliminate chronic low back pain caused by degenerative disc disease. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, and the probe is guided to the affected area using imaging technology such as fluoroscopy. the procedure typically takes about 60-90 minutes, and patients can usually go home the same day or the day after the procedure. Patients may experience some discomfort at the site of the procedure for a few days but can typically return to their regular activities within a few days.

The benefits of Intracept include:

Minimally invasive: Intracept is a minimally invasive procedure that causes less pain and scarring than traditional open surgeries.

  • Targeted pain relief: The procedure targets the nerves that transmit pain signals from the affected disc, providing more targeted pain relief and reducing the risk of side effects.
  • Effective for many patients: Intracept has been shown to be effective for many patients with chronic low back pain caused by degenerative disc disease.
  • Shorter hospital stays: Because the procedure is minimally invasive, patients can typically go home the same day or the day after and return to regular activities faster than traditional open surgeries.

Additional benefits of Intracept include:

  • Targeted pain relief: The procedure targets the nerves that transmit pain signals from the affected disc, providing more targeted pain relief and reducing the risk of side effects.
  • Improved function: Intracept can help patients improve their physical function and quality of life, allowing them to return to normal activities more quickly and with less pain.
  • Reduced need for pain medication: By reducing or eliminating chronic low back pain, Intracept can help patients reduce their reliance on pain medication, which can have side effects and be habit-forming.

It’s important to note that while Intracept can offer several benefits, it may not be appropriate for all patients and conditions. Your doctor can help determine whether Intracept is right for you
