Hip Pain Treatment

Hip pain can significantly impact your daily life, making even simple activities like walking and sitting difficult. Whether your hip pain is caused by injury, arthritis, overuse, or a developmental issue, it’s critical to find a treatment option that relieves your pain and discomfort so you can get back to feeling your best. Thankfully, a broad range of treatments are available, including medications, physical therapy, and at-home remedies, to help you restore your mobility and relieve your pain.

At Allied Neurology & Interventional Pain Practice, we focus on delivering individualized care to effectively address your hip pain. Our team utilizes advanced diagnostic tools and minimally invasive treatments to help reduce pain and improve mobility. With a variety of services all under one roof, we strive to offer compassionate care for every patient.

What Causes Hip Pain?

Hip pain is a common symptom caused by anything from trauma to arthritis and occurs around the hip joint where the femur attaches to the pelvis. In many cases, hip pain can be treated at home or through non-surgical interventions. Your pain might be temporary, chronic, or comes and goes throughout the day, depending on your activity level or the time of day. Based on the reason for your hip pain, the location of your discomfort might also vary, including the inside or outside of the hip, the groin, the butt, or deep inside the joint. Some common causes of hip pain include:

  • Arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Injury
  • Repetitive overuse
  • Nerve issues
  • Developmental disorders
  • Sciatica
  • Cancer
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Pregnancy

Your doctor will examine your hip and perform a range of motion test to diagnose the cause of your pain. To better visualize your hip and diagnose your condition, you might also need imaging like an X-ray, MRI, CT scan, or Ultrasound.

Non-Surgical Hip Pain Treatments

Your treatment plan will be tailored to the cause of your hip pain. Over-the-counter pain medications can often help decrease inflammation and alleviate discomfort during the healing process. Your doctor might also prescribe an anti-inflammatory to help treat your hip pain symptoms. The most common at-home therapy for hip pain is RICE.

  • Rest as much as possible
  • Apply ice for 10-15 minutes a few times a day
  • Use a compression wrap or compression shorts to reduce swelling
  • Elevate your hips above your heart using a pillow

Other non-surgical treatments for hip pain might include physical therapy, acupuncture, and injections.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy can help relieve hip pain, improve range of motion, and strengthen the muscles around the hip. For example, low-impact exercises like swimming, paired with resistance training and stretching, can reduce hip pain and improve mobility for those suffering from arthritis.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a Chinese therapy that involves small needles inserted into the skin. These needles can help reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and release endorphins, which act like natural pain relievers.

Injections

Corticosteroids can be injected directly into the hip joint to reduce pain and inflammation. A corticosteroid combines a steroid and local anesthetic to reduce inflammation and provide immediate relief.

At Allied Neurology and Interventional Pain Practice, we prioritize non-surgical treatments for hip pain. We offer personalized care plans to help you regain mobility and enhance your quality of life.

Surgical Hip Pain Treatments

Most people with hip pain won’t need surgery, but your doctor might recommend it for severe or chronic pain issues that have not responded to non-surgical methods. If you have a hip fracture or structural issue, surgery might be your best option to restore your function and get you back to your daily activities.

The most common type of hip surgery is called a hip arthroscopy. In this procedure, your surgeon will make a small incision in the skin to insert a tool called an arthroscope into the joint. Attached to the arthroscope is a camera and light, allowing your surgeon to see the damage they need to repair. In some severe cases, you might need a hip replacement called an arthroplasty. This surgical procedure replaces your hip joint with an artificial hip to reduce your pain and improve the function of your hip.

Your surgeon will explain each stage of your procedure, including pre- and post-operative care instructions, to ensure your hip heals successfully and you achieve the best results possible.
