What symptoms may lead to EMG/NCS testing?

EMG vs. MRI after a workplace injury

An MRI and an EMG answer different medical questions. An MRI primarily shows anatomy, including spinal discs and surrounding structures, while electrodiagnostic testing evaluates aspects of nerve and muscle function.

For example, an MRI may identify a disc abnormality near a nerve root, while an EMG may provide additional information about whether there is evidence of certain nerve-related dysfunction.

Neither test should be viewed in isolation. The most useful diagnosis typically comes from combining the patient’s history, neurological examination, imaging, and appropriate diagnostic testing.

What if imaging does not explain persistent neurological symptoms?

Some patients continue to experience numbness, weakness, tingling, or radiating pain even when an X-ray or MRI does not completely explain their symptoms.
