Geniculate Nerve Block

Geniculate nerve block and radiofrequency (RF) ablation are minimally invasive procedures used to treat chronic knee pain caused by arthritis, injury, or other conditions. They are an alternative to knee surgery and can be part of a comprehensive knee therapy plan.

A geniculate nerve block involves injecting some anesthetic medication around the genicular nerves that transmit pain signals from the knee joint. The injection provides temporary pain relief and can help diagnose the source of the patient’s pain. If the pain is temporarily relieved after the injection, this can indicate that the genicular nerves are the source of the pain.

Geniculate nerve RF ablation involves using heat generated by a special needle to destroy the genicular nerves. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and the needle is guided to the affected area using imaging technology such as fluoroscopy or CT scanning. The heat generated by the needle damages the nerves, which can reduce or eliminate chronic knee pain caused by arthritis, injury, or other conditions.

The benefits of geniculate nerve block and RF ablation include:

  • Non-surgical treatment: Geniculate nerve block and RF ablation are non-surgical treatments that can provide effective pain relief without the risks and recovery time associated with knee surgery.
  • Minimally invasive: The procedures are minimally invasive, causing less pain and scarring than traditional open surgeries.
  • Customizable treatment: The procedures can be tailored to each patient’s specific needs, including the location and amount of medication used and the location of the injection.
  • Effective pain relief: Geniculate nerve block and RF ablation have been shown to provide significant pain relief for many patients with chronic knee pain.

In addition to the above benefits, geniculate nerve block and RF ablation can be part of a comprehensive knee therapy plan that may include other treatments such as physical therapy, weight management, medication management, Synvisc injections, and cortisone injections.  By combining multiple therapies, patients can receive targeted and effective pain relief.

Overall, geniculate nerve block and RF ablation are safe and effective treatments for chronic knee pain that offer many benefits. They are minimally invasive, customizable, and provide effective pain relief without the risks and recovery time associated with knee surgery.
