Advocate Health to launch drone delivery network

Advocate Health plans to start delivering prescriptions, lab samples and home health supplies via drones next year.

It is partnering with Zipline, a drone-based delivery company, Advocate said Thursday. Drone deliveries will launch in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Advocate is based, followed by Chicago and Milwaukee, two areas where it has a significant presence.

It also plans to launch the program in Georgia as part of its rural health efforts, according to a news release.

Zipline drones will pick up prescriptions, lab specimens and medical supplies at an Advocate Health site and then deliver the items either to another Advocate location or a patient’s home. The system anticipates it will make more than 100,000 deliveries annually across the three initial markets.

Advocate declined to comment on the size of the investment it was making in the program.
